Indian forces eliminated 3 terrorists, including Pahalgam massacre mastermind Hashim Musa, in Srinagar’s Dachigam forests during Operation Mahadev on July 28. Weapons, grenades, and satellite phones were recovered in the swift strike.
Big Win for Indian Forces
In a breakthrough against terrorism, Indian security forces successfully eliminated three Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists, including the mastermind behind the deadly Pahalgam attack that shook Jammu & Kashmir in April 2025. The high-stakes operation—code-named “Operation Mahadev”—was carried out on July 28 in the dense forests of Lidwas, near Mount Mahadev in the Srinagar district.
Where It Happened
The operation took place in the forested ridges between Mount Mahadev and the Zabarwan Hills, under the Dachigam Reserve Forest in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The encounter began around 11:30 AM, following 14 days of careful surveillance.

Who Was Killed?
The main target was Suleiman Shah, also known as Hashim Musa Fauji, a top commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba and the prime accused in the April 22 Pahalgam massacre, which killed 26 innocent civilians.
The other two slain terrorists were:
- Abu Hamza
- Yasir
Both were linked to the same terror network and believed to be foreign operatives.
How Operation Mahadev Was Executed
- Surveillance & Intel: Intelligence agencies intercepted suspicious satellite phone calls and movements. Local nomads also provided clues in the rugged terrain.
- Multi-Force Operation: A joint team from the Chinar Corps, 24 Rashtriya Rifles, 4 PARA (Special Forces), CRPF, and J&K Police launched a precision strike.
- Quick Action: The terrorists were found hiding in tree trenches. The entire operation lasted under an hour after contact was made.
- Weapons Seized: An M4 Carbine, an AK-47 rifle, 17 grenades, satellite phones, and other war-grade ammunition were recovered.
Symbolism Behind “Mahadev”
Interestingly, the operation took place on Sawan’s third Monday, a sacred day for Lord Shiva worshippers. The name “Mahadev” symbolizes the third eye of Shiva—associated with destroying evil—aligning the mission with India’s spiritual and cultural identity.
Official Response
Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha praised the forces, stating:
“This decisive strike shows India’s unwavering commitment to national security. The brave soldiers eliminated a major threat. Salute to their courage.”
